NEOSEC Ocean Literacy Summit: Connecting Climate, Communities, and Coasts

The last conference presentation of the year at the NEOSEC Ocean Literacy Summit in Gloucester, Maine. I was sorry that I couldn’t be there in person, but so grateful they were willing to zoom me in. I had such a great time presenting with Lauren Radar from Buckingham, Browne & Nichols school in Cambridge, MA. I chatted about building ocean and climate literacy through non-fiction books, showcasing The Global Ocean, and promoted the efficacy of using non-fiction books in the classroom to explore ocean & climate science. And Lauren shared first-hand her experience using non-fiction books in the classroom. This year, she has replaced her grade 5 textbooks! Instead she is using all three of my books as their classroom “textbook”, as well as supplementary non-fiction and fiction books to augment the learning. It was exciting to learn more from her about her journey and gain insights into the opportunities I have to make the books even better as classroom tools and the supporting resources I can develop!
